Salem as a freight market

Salem is Oregon's capital and the center of the mid Willamette Valley, the farm belt between Portland and Eugene that grows berries, hops, grass seed, hazelnuts, vegetables and wine grapes. The freight that comes with that is food processing: the valley's canneries, frozen food plants, snack makers and beverage producers are in and around Salem, Woodburn and Albany, and they receive packaging and ingredients in dry vans and ship finished goods the same way. Salem's own industrial areas are along the Union Pacific line and the airport on the east side of the city, and a corporate park on the south side has drawn a large distribution center.

Interstate 5 runs along the east side of the city, Oregon Route 22 crosses it east toward the Cascades and west to the coast, and Oregon Route 99E follows the old highway through the valley towns. Albany, 25 miles south, is a specialty metals town with titanium and zirconium plants, and McMinnville, to the northwest in Yamhill County, is wine country with an industrial park and an aviation museum. Woodburn, to the north, has food plants and a retail outlet center along the interstate.

What our records show here

Salem is a place we deliver to rather than one we load in. Every load we brought into the Salem area between January and the close of September 2026 came north as a power only move, each one starting in the Inland Empire and following the same plan: a shipper owned trailer, loaded in Southern California, pulled north by a tractor and driver we supplied. One of those deliveries was in McMinnville. Partner carriers checked through Highway hauled them; our own trucks ran the Portland trips more than the Salem ones in that period.

We had no pickups in the Salem area in those months. We can quote freight out of the mid valley, and a tractor that has just dropped a trailer is the natural candidate, but we do not have a southbound pattern here and we say so.

Two days from Southern California

Salem is about 920 miles from central Los Angeles and a little under 1,000 from the Inland Empire where our loads start, all on Interstate 5. That is two driving shifts under federal hours of service rules, with a ten hour break between them, and in our records the loads took about 46 hours between pickup and delivery, so plan on the second or third day after pickup. The climb over Siskiyou Summit into Oregon is the winter variable; from November through March we allow a day of slack for chain requirements and closures.

From Portland, Salem is about 45 miles south on Interstate 5, and from Eugene about 65 miles north, both same day moves within the valley.

Equipment we run to Salem

Power only is what our records show, and the power only trucking page describes how a trailer move works. Dry vans are the trailer the valley's food plants and distribution centers load, and ours are 53 foot dry vans on our trucks and on partner carriers'. Flatbeds for the metals plants in Albany, the farm equipment dealers and the construction trades are arranged through partner carriers. Oregon's weight mile tax applies to every truck and is already in our quotes.

Seasonal and local notes

The valley's harvest and processing season runs from June into October, when the canneries and freezers run around the clock and dock appointments are tight. Winter brings rain to the valley floor and ice to the passes: the Siskiyou Summit to the south and the Cascade passes on Oregon Route 22 and US 20 to the east. Interstate 5 through Salem is a short, busy stretch with closely spaced exits, and the food plants on the east side are reached across the rail line.

Salem is on Pacific Time. No branch, no yard: Oregon is served from our office in Covina, California.

Data center and heavy equipment freight

The valley's plants and utility projects, and the data center campuses in Hillsboro an hour north, bring transformers, generators and chillers up Interstate 5 on flatbeds and lowboys. The data center freight pages describe how we move that equipment and the permits an oversize piece needs in Oregon.

Questions shippers ask

How often do you deliver in Salem?
Several times a year, judging by our own loads, and each Salem delivery so far has been a single power only load pulled north out of the Inland Empire in Southern California.
How long does a load take from Los Angeles to Salem?
Two days with one driver on Interstate 5, about 920 miles. Our loads took about 46 hours from pickup to delivery, and winter chain controls at the Siskiyou Summit can add a day.
Do you serve Albany, Woodburn and McMinnville?
Yes. The mid Willamette Valley from Woodburn south to Albany and west to McMinnville is one market for us, and McMinnville appears in our records as a delivery point.
Can you pick up freight in Salem?
We can quote it. Our Salem loads have all been deliveries so far, so a pickup depends on a truck being nearby, and we will say plainly whether one is.
