One of our busiest lanes
Taken together, loads from the Salinas Valley to Southern California were our most frequent lane of 300 miles or more from January through September 2026. We moved several a week, in nearly every week of that period.
About six in ten delivered in the Inland Empire, around Rancho Cucamonga, Redlands and Ontario. Most of the rest delivered in Los Angeles County, in City of Industry, Commerce and Vernon, and a smaller number went to Orange County.
Two ways south
There are two practical routes. The coastal route stays on US 101 through King City, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara into the San Fernando Valley. It is about 300 miles to downtown Los Angeles and avoids the mountain pass, but it is slower through the coastal towns. Its one notable climb is the Cuesta Grade just north of San Luis Obispo, and the freeway narrows through Santa Barbara.
The inland route leaves US 101 at Paso Robles, crosses on State Route 46 to Interstate 5, and comes over the Tejon Pass. It is the usual choice for deliveries in the Inland Empire and measures about 330 miles to Rancho Cucamonga. Drivers pick between them based on the delivery address, the time of day and the weather on the Grapevine. The crossing on State Route 46 is about 60 miles, from Paso Robles to Interstate 5 at Lost Hills.
Typical transit time
The drive is six to seven hours. Our loads most often picked up during the day in Salinas and delivered the following morning, so plan on next day delivery. It is a comfortable single shift for one driver under the federal eleven hour driving limit. Same day delivery can happen with a dawn pickup, but we do not promise it.
What moves on the lane
More than nine loads in ten are dry vans. The rest are flatbeds. None of it is refrigerated, which surprises people who know Salinas for produce. We do not list refrigerated service, and the freight we handle here is dry goods.
About one in four of the vans going to the Inland Empire is dropped at the receiver and swapped for an empty. Deliveries in Los Angeles County are live unloaded.
Partner carriers haul this lane for us. In 2026 our own trucks took only a handful of the loads, so you should expect a vetted outside carrier, checked through Highway, with us managing the load from quote to proof of delivery.
Northbound from Southern California
The return direction is much lighter: a couple of loads a month from the Inland Empire to the Salinas Valley, most of them power only moves pulling a shipper owned trailer. If you need freight moved north, send the details and we will quote it.
