Reno as a freight market
Reno became a distribution and manufacturing center because of where it sits: a day's drive from the Bay Area over Donner Pass by Interstate 80, a day from Southern California up US 395, in a state with no inventory tax, with land to build on. Sparks, immediately east, is the older industrial city, with the Union Pacific's yard on the transcontinental line and a grid of warehouses between the interstate and the railroad. East of Sparks, along Interstate 80 toward the Lyon County line, the industrial corridor has drawn electric vehicle, battery and data center plants into one of the largest industrial parks in the world, and the warehouses and suppliers that follow them.
The highways are Interstate 80 east and west, US 395 and Interstate 580 north toward Susanville and south to Carson City, the state capital, and US 50 east across the state. The airport on the south side of Reno handles cargo. Reno's shippers are distributors serving the whole West from one building, manufacturers in the corridor, and the construction trades of a region that has been growing fast.
What our records show here
Reno is a receiving market in our records, and an unusual one: most of the deliveries are flatbeds. From the start of 2026 through September nearly every Reno area load on our board was a delivery rather than a pickup. The biggest share was open deck freight from the Salinas Valley in California over Donner Pass to the industrial corridor east of Sparks, about 360 miles, on flatbeds from partner carriers we checked through Highway before each pickup. Dry vans arrived from the Willamette Valley in Oregon a few times, and dry vans delivered into Sparks and Carson City, one of them on our own trucks.
Partner carriers hauled most of these loads, each vetted through Highway before dispatch, with our own trucks on a few. Pickups in the Reno area were rare, a single dry van south to Los Angeles County. We can quote freight out of northern Nevada and a tractor fresh off a delivery is the natural fit, but we do not have a southbound pattern yet and we say so.
Getting to Reno
From Southern California there are two ways. US 395 runs north from the Mojave through the Owens Valley and past Mono Lake to Carson City and Reno, about 470 miles from central Los Angeles, a mostly two lane highway with long empty stretches and mountain grades, a next day delivery, and a route to check for snow between November and April. Interstate 5 and Interstate 80 through Sacramento and over Donner Pass is about 520 miles, all freeway, also next day, with Donner as the winter variable: chain controls and closures there are routine in storms.
From the Bay Area it is about 220 miles over Donner, a same day move when the pass is open; from Sacramento about 130 miles; from the Salinas Valley about 360 miles, next day in our records. Salt Lake City is about 520 miles east on Interstate 80 across the Nevada desert.
Equipment we run to Reno
Flatbeds first and dry vans second in our records, which is the reverse of most places we serve. The flatbed freight is industrial and construction material for the corridor east of Sparks, arranged through partner carriers checked through Highway; our own fleet is 53 foot dry vans, and those cover the distribution freight into Sparks and Reno. Power only moves for shippers that keep their own trailer pool are quoted on request. We do not list refrigerated service.
Seasonal and local notes
Winter is the fact of life for a Reno load. Donner Pass requires chains or closes in most storms, US 395 crosses passes of its own, and Reno sits at about 4,500 feet with snow of its own from December into March. A winter quote carries a day of slack. Summer is dry and hot in the corridor east of Sparks, and wildfire smoke has closed Interstate 80 and US 395 for hours in recent years. The corridor's plants have strict gate procedures and delivery windows, and the older Sparks warehouses are reached across the rail line.
Nevada is on Pacific Time, so Reno keeps the same clock as Los Angeles. Covina, California is our one location, and every Nevada load is planned there.
Data center and heavy equipment freight
The industrial corridor east of Sparks holds several large data center campuses as well as battery and vehicle plants, and the transformers, switchgear, generators, chillers and battery containers for them arrive on flatbeds and lowboys over Donner Pass or up US 395. See the data center freight section for how we move each kind of equipment and the Nevada and California permits an oversize piece needs.

Questions shippers ask
- How often do you deliver in Reno?
- We send a truck to Reno whenever a shipper needs one, with no fixed calendar; most of what we have delivered there is open deck freight out of the Salinas Valley bound for the industrial corridor east of Sparks, along with dry vans from Oregon.
- How long does a truckload take from Los Angeles to Reno?
- Next day by either route: about 470 miles up US 395 or about 520 miles by Interstate 5 and Interstate 80 over Donner Pass. Winter chain controls can add a day on both.
- Do you serve the industrial corridor east of Sparks?
- Yes. Most of our Reno area deliveries landed there in 2026, on flatbeds from California, and it is covered in our quotes for the Reno and Sparks area.
- Can you pick up freight in Reno?
- We can quote it. Our Reno loads have been almost all deliveries, so a pickup depends on a truck being nearby, and we will say plainly whether one is.
