Stockton as a freight market

Stockton is the northern valley's freight hub and one of the few inland cities in California with a seaport. The Port of Stockton sits at the end of a deep water channel from the San Francisco Bay and handles bulk and project cargo, steel, fertilizer and equipment rather than containers. Two intermodal rail terminals serve the area, the BNSF yard on the east side of Stockton and the Union Pacific terminal in Lathrop just to the south, which makes this one of the main places where rail freight from the rest of the country meets California trucks.

The warehouses followed. The corridor from Stockton south through Lathrop and Manteca and west over Interstate 205 to Tracy holds distribution centers for national retailers, grocers and online sellers, serving the Bay Area over the Altamont Pass and the rest of Northern California up Interstate 5. Interstate 5 and State Route 99 run north and south through the area, State Route 4 crosses east and west, and the airport on the south side of Stockton handles air cargo.

What our records show here

Stockton is an outbound market for us. The area touched about one load a week in our records between January and September 2026, and more than four loads in five were pickups. The lane is specific: dry vans from Stockton to the San Gabriel Valley, on the east side of Los Angeles, about 350 miles, which ran about twice a month and in most months of the year. A few more went elsewhere in Los Angeles County, while a few dry vans arrived from the Willamette Valley in Oregon. There was a flatbed now and then from the Lathrop and Manteca area.

Partner carriers hauled nearly all of it, checked through Highway before each load. Our own trucks are based in Southern California and rarely run this far north, so on a Stockton load we work as your broker: finding the truck, checking the carrier, tracking the load and handling the paperwork.

South to Los Angeles

Stockton is about 340 miles from central Los Angeles: south on Interstate 5 the length of the San Joaquin Valley, over the Tejon Pass, and into the basin. That is six to seven hours of driving, inside one shift, so a morning pickup can be at the receiver the same evening if its dock is open; the pattern in our records was a pickup during the day and a delivery the next morning, and most of our loads went to the San Gabriel Valley by way of Interstate 210. State Route 99 is the alternative down the east side of the valley, slower but with more services.

The Grapevine is the winter risk, and valley fog is the other. Both can hold a load for hours, and we track each one and tell you where the truck is. To the Bay Area it is about 80 miles over the Altamont, a same day move; to Sacramento about 50 miles up Interstate 5 or the 99.

Equipment we run from Stockton

Dry vans, with occasional flatbeds. The shippers here load palletized freight from docks into 53 foot trailers, and that is what we quote most. Flatbeds for the port's steel and project cargo and for the manufacturers along the 99 are arranged through partner carriers on request. Power only moves for shippers with trailers of their own are quoted the same way. We do not list refrigerated service or container drayage from the port.

Seasonal and local notes

The northern valley is farm country too, and harvest from late summer into fall tightens truck supply around Stockton, Lodi and Manteca. Winter fog is the other seasonal fact: tule fog settles on the valley floor from November into February and can close roads in the morning. Interstate 205 and the Altamont are congested with Bay Area commuters in both rush hours, which matters for a Tracy pickup headed west. Stockton and Lathrop also enforce truck routes around the rail yards and the port, so the exact dock address helps.

No branch, no yard: San Joaquin County is served from our office in Covina, California.

Data center and heavy equipment freight

Project cargo through the Port of Stockton and the data center and utility builds across the northern valley and the East Bay bring transformers, switchgear and modules onto flatbeds and lowboys here. See the data center freight section for how we handle those moves and the oversize permits they need.

Questions shippers ask

How often do you run freight in Stockton?
About one load a week in our records for January through September 2026, counting Stockton, Lathrop, Tracy and Manteca, and more than four in five were pickups.
Where do your Stockton loads go?
Mostly to the San Gabriel Valley on the east side of Los Angeles, about 350 miles south on Interstate 5, in dry vans, around twice monthly during 2026. A few went elsewhere in Los Angeles County.
Are Stockton loads on your own trucks?
Rarely. Our trucks are based in Southern California, so nearly all of our Stockton loads were hauled by partner carriers checked through Highway, with our office managing the move from booking to delivery.
Do you serve Tracy and Lathrop?
Yes. The distribution corridor from Stockton through Lathrop and Manteca to Tracy is one market for us, and we quote pickups and deliveries at any address in it.
